Breaking down an opponent’s defense is the first key to defeating that opponent.
The Mingus Union High School boys basketball team broke down the Sedona Red Rock High School defense from the outside in, winning going away 67-33 in an early-season home tilt between the two cross-valley rivals on Dec. 3.
The Marauders’ passing game was sharp early, consistently finding open shooters on the perimeter, and when the Scorpions defense came out to cover, it provided the Mingus players with several scoring opportunities in the paint.
“The kids did a great job of sharing the basketball and looking for each other,” said Marauders boys basketball coach Mark Owens. “I think when you share the ball early, it’s contagious and guys will start looking for each other, knowing that they’re going to get it back at a certain point in time. So that was fun to watch us in transition and in the half court, too, moving it around and getting everyone involved.”
