The Camp Verde volleyball team is nearing the end of its season, and though the losses continue to pile up, all indications are that the team is headed in the right direction.
With only three players returning from last season’s varsity squad, and a roster full of sophomores, head coach Darcy Evans knew in advance that this would be a season of learning and growing for her young squad.
“From where we were at the beginning I think they’re learning a lot of things,” Evans said. “Their main struggle right now is just working as a team, trying to pull it all together.”
The Cowboys girls hosted the Division IV, No. 8-seeded Scottsdale Christian Eagles on Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Camp Verde gymnasium, and seemed to run out of gas in a 3-0 [25-12, 25-16, 25-7] defeat that was their second match in 24 hours.
A block by senior middle hitter Viola Logsdon and a pair of aces by senior setter Kayla Niederer kept the Cowboys close in the early stages of the first set, down just 7-6.
The Eagles pulled out to a 12-7 lead, but a kill by Logsdon, an ace by libero Kayla Sandoval and another kill by Logsdon brought them back to within two points at 12-10.
But Eagles’ freshman Emma Villasenor served seven-straight points to put her team up 19-10, causing Evans to call a timeout.
