The Camp Verde boys soccer players are becoming better finishers, which may serve them well, in more ways than one, over the remainder of the season.
With five very winnable games left on their schedule, not including tournaments, the Cowboys are in position to finish well.
A 10-0 shutout by the Cowboys over Payson on Sept. 19 may have created unrealistic expectations for a while, but what goes up must come down, as Camp Verde found in a 2-1 loss to the Northland Prep Spartans on Sept. 24 and a 4-2 loss to the Chino Valley Cougars on Oct. 1.
But despite those losses, the Cowboys are still on track for a berth in the state playoffs with a 2-3 record and a No. 12 state ranking.
Camp Verde coach David Miller said he still feels like his team is rounding into shape, and has high expectations for the remainder of the season.
“It’s tough to say because we’re still losing, but we’re getting better, we’re a better team,” Miller said. “I feel good about the way we’re going and the way the players are developing.”
