The Camp Verde boys soccer team was blown at on Sept. 4, which may have prevented the Phoenix Country Day School Eagles from getting blown out.
Wind gusts in the faces of the Camp Verde boys during the second half of their game against the Eagles on Sept. 4, slowed an offensive onslaught that saw them produce 28 shots on goal and several near misses in what was ultimately a 2-0 season-opening victory.
Both Cowboys’ goals and 18 of their shots on goal came in a first half that they dominated, rarely letting the ball get past midfield while applying constant pressure on the Eagles’ defense.
But Camp Verde head coach David Miller said the gusting wind in the second half cause him to change his team’s strategy.
“We kept the ball low and started moving it with short passing and so we did a better job that way,” Miller said. “We couldn’t play our long game at all, we had to play our short game and the short game makes your offense more susceptible to interceptions.
“One of our advantages this year is we’ve got tremendous team speed, especially on the front and the outside, and we can do that better when we have [good] conditions.”
