With an experienced, senior-laden team, Camp Verde boys soccer coach David Miller said his team is going for a championship this season.
“Any coach worth his salt going into the first game would have nothing less,” Miller said. “You set your goals high and you try to achieve it.”
The young men who populate the team, Miller said, always step onto the field for the first day of practice with an air of invincibility.
“It’s your job as a coach to make sure they’re as prepared as they can be so they can meet their expectations, and they don’t come out here to take second place — they come out here to be a champion,” he said. “It’s my job and my staff’s job to prepare them the best they can be so we can
help them meet their potential, and hopefully their expectations.”
The potential, and expectations, of this year’s team are high, although they are likely to face obstacles, not the least of which is a tough schedule.
“We’ve got Blue Ridge in our group who’s a five-time defending state champion,” Miller said, “and they always seem to return a ton of kids. We also have Chino Valley and Northland Prep and [Phoenix Country Day] and Snowflake and Desert Christian — all strong programs.
“It’s a very competitive group and everybody seems to just reload, but
we should be competitive with those guys.”
