Volleyball team a work in progress

Published:

In her fifth year as head coach for the Camp Verde volleyball team, head coach Darcy Evans is facing a rebuilding year, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

With only three true returning varsity players, and a passel of sophomores who populated the junior varsity squad and saw only limited time with the varsity last year, Evans is looking at a team that is certain to be a work in progress.

“We have a young team, but it’s exciting because we can build on it for the next few years,” Evans said. “It will be a rebuilding [year], but we do have some talent.

“They’re just very young, so they just haven’t had the experience that they need yet.”
The team’s three returning players – Kayla Sandoval, Kayla Niederer and Viola Logsdon —will be asked to carry a heavy load, at least initially.

Sandoval, Evans said, will likely be starting in the libero spot after having worked extensively at it with Evans last season.

The team’s setter will be Kayla Niederer, and Logsdon will play at the middle blocker position.
Logsdon, Evans said,  really improved at the position last year.

“We were super happy with her progress,” Evans said. “So I’m really excited to see what she does this year.”
