Mingus Spiritline are early risers

Published:

New Mingus Union High School Spiritline coach Brenda Watson and her team are morning people.

They must be, because they are at the MUHS gymnasium for practice every morning by 6:30 a.m.

“My girls carry a big load,” Watson said. “Not only do they practice every day, they start their practice [early], and sometimes when competitions are going on we have a morning practice, and then we have an evening practice.

“And that’s not including any fundraisers that we do.”

Watson, who was the Mingus Spiritline team’s assistant coach last year, said that she is planning to implement several things with her team in terms of furthering their involvement in community service this year.

“We’re definitely going to be reaching out to the community,” she said.
Among the 17 members of the team, Watson said that five have been with the program since they were freshmen.

“They’re now seniors,” she said, “so they’ve been in the program quite a long time.”
