CVHS Cowboys host 11-team basketball tournament

Published:

The Camp Verde High School boys basketball team has been working hard this summer, and after hosting a tournament, they are taking a break until basketball season starts in four short months.

The Cowboys hosted a small summer tournament with various schools on Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22, at the Camp Verde High School and Middle School gyms.

The Cowboys hosted the tournament on Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22, at the high school and middle school gyms with 11 teams from Northern Arizona and Tucson.“All the teams that came are small schools, so the competition was even,” said Jordan Lewis, CVHS Varsity Basketball assistant coach. “Mingus Union was the biggest school here.”

Eleven teams participated in the two-day tournament: Camp Verde, split squads from Mingus Union, Ash Fork, Chino Valley, Joseph City, Mayer, Hopi, Payson and split squads from St. Gregory in Tucson.

“It all went really smoothly,” said Dan Wall, CVHS varsity basketball head coach. “The kids all had a good experience, and I had a lot of the coaches tell me it was good for the teams that they came and that their kids got a lot out of it.”

There were two games going every hour from noon to 8 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. There was also a hospitality room for the coaches, an amenity that is not common in summer tournaments.
