Katie Wilson, a member of the Cowboys girls basketball team’s dynamic trio of seniors this last season, will now have the chance to continue her athletic career at the next level.

With her excellent outside shot and post skills, Wilson, a three-sport Camp Verde High School athlete, will be a member of both the basketball and track and field teams at Martin Luther College, a small Lutheran college in New Ulm, Minn.

Katie Wilson throws the shot put with her powerful arm during the 2011 Arizona Interscholastic Association Division III State Track and Field Meet. Wilson hopes to walk-on with Martin Luther College’s track and field team after throwing personal bests of 115 feet, 6 inches in discus and 30 feet, 8 inches in shot put. “I feel so relieved,” Wilson said. “People always say senior year is supposed to be fun, but I was stressed out not knowing where I was going to go or what I was going to do after high school.”

Luke Steege, a former Camp Verde High School head football coach and teacher, and a member of the same Lutheran church as Wilson, helped her by contacting the basketball coach at Martin Luther. Steege helped Wilson put together a film of highlights from her high school career. Then, a former Martin Luther College basketball player watched Wilson play in a tournament that led Wilson to be asked to join the team. She hopes to walk on with the track and field team with her throwing skills.

“If it wasn’t for coach Steege, I wouldn’t be going there,” Wilson said. “I’ve been so involved in sports since I was 3 years old, and I can’t imagine not playing in college.”
