The Camp Verde High School softball team was knocked out of the Division III State Championship tournament in the second round, but with its core group of players returning next year, they should be back.
The Cowboys ended the regular season with a 9-9 record and the No. 20 spot in the Division III power rankings.
The Cowboys upset No. 13 Tuba City in the first round of the tournament May 2 at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix beating the Warriors 3-2 while displaying great defense.
“That was unbelievable,” Cowboys Head Coach Debbi Miller said. “I felt like we could do it going in, but they had a tough, good pitcher, but I knew if we played our game, we could beat them. It was a great win for us. The girls kept fighting and digging deep.”
The first four innings were scoreless. Sharli MacDonald then hit a triple and was bunted in by Danya Weir. Weir has a reputation of hitting the ball out, but this time she knew a bunt would do the trick. She told Miller she could do it, and she was right.
