Fishing season has begun in Northern Arizona

Published:

The weather is warmer and the Verde Valley’s temperatures are perfect for a day of fishing.

“Fishing is year-round here at Dead Horse,” Margie Sanchez, a park ranger at Dead Horse Ranch State Park, said. “We stock trout November through March and catfish the first week of June and the last week of September. Naturally [largemouth] bass and some catfish come in from the Verde River, too.”

The Arizona Game and Fish Department stocks the Verde River and lagoons with Rainbow Trout all throughout the winter months, as well. The lagoons are also stocked with channel catfish in the warmer season for National Fishing Day in June and Verde River Day in September.

Trout fishing in Northern Arizona is great from spring until mid-June.

It also includes crappie and bluegill.

The state park offers fishing for the beginner, the experienced, and everyone in between, including fly fishing which is becoming increasingly popular in the area.
