The Camp Verde Middle School boys basketball team keeps its sights on the state championship as it reaches the midseason point.
The Cowboys are now 8-1 with a dominant presence on the court and are right on track to the state championship.
“I feel the boys are in a good spot even with the loss,” said Donnie Shanks, CVMS head coach. “I just wish we had more of a challenge throughout the season so we can be ready for the high pressure games.”
The Cowboys started December with a big 36-23 defensive win over powerhouse Big Park Community School. The Cowboys dominated the game early with an 11-1 score in the first quarter and continued the lead with a 19-5 score at halftime.
The Big Park Coyotes came out after halftime and scored 14 points to the Cowboys’ seven in the third quarter. But, the Cowboys took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 points and holding the Coyotes to just four.
Beau Bullard was the leading scorer with 17 points. Reyes Herrera had six points and Ryan Cain had four.
The Cowboys took control early in a 40-24 win over Cottonwood Middle School. They outscored Cottonwood 8-3 in the first quarter. Camp Verde moved the ball well in the second quarter and brought the score to 21-5 at halftime.
