The Camp Verde High School basketball girls continue to rope in their competition on the court.
The Cowboys have improved their record to 10-2 after beating the Joy Christian Eagles [8-3] at home on Dec. 17. CVHS won 55-45, but it wasn’t an easy win.
“We started out very strong, but we got into foul trouble like we always seem to do,” said Mark Showers, the Cowboys’ head coach.
The Cowboys were up 18-7 by the end of the first quarter. Showers said the girls seemed to be clicking, moving the ball well and the defense was looking good.
But then the girls started playing overly aggressive, putting them in foul trouble. Senior Amanda Showers and junior Maddy Showers had to be subbed-out since they were racking up the fouls
The Eagles outscored the Cowboys in the second quarter, but the Cowboys maintained the lead, 30-22.
“We had these spurts,” Mark Showers said. “We looked strong and pulled away with the lead but then we would start fouling, and [the Eagles] started coming back.”
The Cowboys were able to put up 19 points in the third quarter while only allowing seven Eagles points.
The girls seemed to struggle in the fourth quarter the same way they did in the second. The Cowboys didn’t score a single field goal, but scored six free throws. The Eagles cut the lead to 10, scoring 16 points.
The Cowboys held on to the lead and took home the victory, 55-45.
“If we play the way we did in the first and third quarters in all four quarters in every game, we would be very tough to beat,” Showers said.
The Cowboys shot 50 percent for the game. Amanda Showers was the leading scorer with 14 points. She also had three steals.
Senior Donnie Buss had 11 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Senior Katie Wilson had nine points, 23 rebounds, two steals and two assists. Maddy Showers also scored nine points with three 3-pointers.
Now that it has passed the midseason point, Showers believes his team is on track, getting more comfortable with its new offense and getting better each game, which is what he wanted.
