Weary Cowboys girls lose to tough Trojans

The Camp Verde High School girls basketball team lost 56-41 to one of its toughest opponents at home on Wednesday, Dec. 12, in a Division III conference game.

The weary Cowboys [5-2], playing their eighth game in six days, lost to the Valley Christian Trojans [7-2],  who built a big early lead on their way to the victory.

“Valley Christian is one of the better teams in our division,” said Mark Showers, CVHS head coach. “It was unfortunate to play a team that good at the end of that string [of games].”

Cowboys senior Donnie Buss led Camp Verde with 10 points and 15 rebounds while seniors Amanda Showers and Katie Wilson each had eight points.

The Trojans won the tipoff and went off on a scoring spree, putting up 16 points in the first quarter. Buss and junior Maddy Showers scored on jump shots while Wilson added two points from the free-throw line. A basket by sophomore Kayla Sandoval with an assist by sophomore Rayana Chatter made the score 16-8, Trojans, at the end of the first quarter.

The Cowboys seemed a little disorientated as their passes were off the mark, shots weren’t going in and nobody seemed to know who was guarding whom. The Trojans took full advantage of the Cowboys’ miscues.

Showers said he thought his team was in the “Twilight Zone.”
