The Camp Verde High School wrestlers are known as steady contenders when they step onto the mat, and this year is going to be no exception.
The Cowboys were runner-ups as a team for the Division IV state championship last season, losing the title to big-time rival St. Johns. Individually, the Cowboys came home with a number of state placers, including now-seniors Joel Lobaugh and Alex Anzar, and sophomore Ryan Allred, who won the state champion title in the 126-pound weight class as a freshman.
“We were a good, young team last season,” Head Coach Bob Weir said. “It was a rebuilding year, so getting second in the state was nice. We lost two senior state champions, but the [returning wrestlers] have matured a lot. We will be in the top five for sure.”
With a combination of a dedicated group of talented wrestlers, an outstanding veteran coaching staff and a year-round wresting program that continually perfects the wrestlers moves and builds their strength, a recipe for power on the mat is made.
“We have a tougher schedule this year,” Weir said. “Not our toughest, but we will face a number of quality teams, and there will be challenges.”
Weir is returning for his 21st year as the Cowboys wrestling coach. Mario Chagnolla is back for his 17th year while Jim Bowser and Tracy Tudor return for their 11th and 7th years, respectively.
Also, former Cowboys come back and help when they can.
With four state championship titles and two state runner-up championship titles, CVHS wrestling has proven how strong it is.
“Since Bob took over the program, wresting became a tradition at Camp Verde,” said Mark Showers, CVHS athletic director. “He started building the program at the middle school level and works with kids starting at a young age. That’s why the program is so successful.”
