Buss, Showers and Wilson share helm of Cowboys b-ball

Published:

Donnie Buss, Amanda Showers and Katie Wilson are like sisters.

They have known each other for years, and they have been best friends all through high school. Now it’s their senior year and together, they are will be leading forces on the basketball court.

“There will be a lot of pressure on these three [girls] this season,” said Mark Showers, head coach of the Camp Verde High School girls basketball team.

As this year’s three captains, Buss, Amanda Showers and Wilson will be filling the spots of three graduated seniors who were major assets to the team last season: Lila Hickey, Tori Mathews and Mayra Perez.

“We are not as big as we were last year, but we have quickness,” Buss said. “We are all excited to play.”

“We have really good shooters,” Wilson added. “Us three have been waiting for this since fifth grade. We will be very motivated.”

The girls are getting used to a speedier offense with more full-court, aggressive play, a switch from the slow play set-up that got the ball inside to the post last season.

The three-sport girls have already seen court action together as seniors this year during volleyball season, but it is the game of basketball they think they are stronger in.

“Basketball has always been my favorite,” Showers said. “I’ve been playing it longer, and I personally think I’m better at it than volleyball.”

“The game is more aggressive, which I like,” Buss said. “There is not a net in between, so I can get physical.”

Being as close as they are outside of sports will, no doubt, resonates on the court this season as they lead the Cowboys.

“We trust each other,” Showers said. “We know each others’ strengths and weaknesses, which we can play off of.”

“We know each other on the court,” Buss said. “If one gets frustrated, we know why.”

“It’s an amazing chemistry,” Wilson added. “We know our strengths and weaknesses and know what to do.”

This chemistry the three possess will give them an edge when competition gets tough.

“We like to push each other
