Mingus cross-country runners take second after state run

Published:

The Marauders of the cross-country team continued to make a name for themselves as tough competitors when they competed in regionals and state.

The girls placed second as a team at state after impressive runs at regionals. Senior Skylar Storie placed third individually.

Junior Gustavo Banks and sophomore Jordan Bramblett individually competed at the state meet for the boys after both earning Second Team All-Section honors.

The Division III Section I regionals were held at Hidden Cove Golf Course in Holbrook on Saturday, Oct. 27. Twelve teams competed and the top six continued on to state.

Page won the meet with 39 points. MUHS took second with 49 points, Chile finished with 75, Window Rock with 143, Chino Valley with 155 and Tuba City with 158 points.

“Not many times — maybe never since I can’t recall once in my many years of doing this — can I say all the girls had their season best time,” said Jim Bostwick, MUHS head cross-country coach. “[Girl’s] coach Lisa Rauch has done a fantastic job with girls.

“We also told the girls if all top five break seven minutes a mile, it would just be impossible to lose in high school. Well, we were proved wrong there as all five did break seven minutes per mile over the course and Page came out victorious.”

However, Storie won the 3.18-mile, 5,000-feet altitude race, beating 88 runners with a time of 19:29.

Since the start of the new Arizona Interscholastic Association sectional set-up three years ago, Storie has placed 12th, fourth and now first in this regional race.

Justine Taylor took fourth place and a First Team All-Section honor with a 20:28 time. She placed 27th last year.

Freshman Brenna McCallum came up big in her first
