Cross-valley rival sweeps Camp Verde

Published:

The Cowboys volleyball team fought but struggled against their almost-indestructible cross-valley rival when they traveled to Sedona Red Rock High School on Oct. 17.

The Camp Verde High School Cowboys, who are now 6-10 overall and 1-2 in the Division IV Section I conference, are now in eighth place while the SRRHS Scorpions, now 23-1 overall, bumped up to the No. 2 spot in the conference with a 5-0 conference record after beating the Cowboys 3-0 on Oct. 17.

“We talked a lot about being competitive, moving our feet, to be ready for anything,” said Darcy Evans, CVHS head coach, when asked about how the girls came into this game. “We knew that [the Scorpions] were big hitters, so we knew we had to be present at the net.”

The Scorpions took the lead in the first set, but Cowboys Donnie Buss and Viola Logston played great defense at the net while Katie Wilson and Caitlin Harris recorded a couple of digs to keep early rallies alive.

Some miscommunication on Camp Verde’s side of the net plus a killer arm of Sedona sophomore McKenna Woodford equaled a struggle for any big Cowboy plays.

The Cowboys continued to make small mistakes such as hitting the ball into the net or out of bounds. The Scorpions never allowed the Cowboys to get within five points of them throughout the entire first set as they capitalized on the these mistakes.
