The Camp Verde Middle School has a small team on the gridiron, but it has a gumption to play the game.
The Cowboys have a 2-5 record after playing their final home game Tuesday, Oct. 16, against the Northwest Christian Crusaders from Phoenix. They lost 28-6, but refused to give up any points in the second half.
“We won the second half,” sand Brian Pelfrey, CVMS head coach. “Considering we only had 14 boys suited up, they played really well. It’s tough to play teams with 35 kids. The boys put in a lot of heart and never gave up.”
Dion Fortune, Ryan Loza, Reyes Herrera and Trey Terry were captains for the Cowboys.
The Crusaders had first possession of the ball. They pushed their way into Cowboy territory, but a strong Camp Verde defense held them and forced them to punt.
Northwest Christian’s defense did the same thing to the Cowboys, though.
Fortune almost intercepted the ball before sacking the Crusaders’ quarterback. At five minutes into the first quarter, Northwest Christian’s weapon, its running back, took off down the sideline for a 50-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion was good and the Crusaders were up 8-0.
Northwest Christian’s defense was taller, bigger and stronger at every position. This made it difficult for the Cowboys to make any big plays. The defense continually stopped the Cowboys run game.
