Annexation push fails

An effort to annex the Verde Santa Fe neighborhood into the city of Cottonwood apparently failed last week when annexation supporters couldn’t produce enough signatures from the area’s residents.

Verde Santa Fe is located along Cornville Road, just east of State Route 89A.

“We thought it was finished, but apparently we still have another week to go,” said Deanna King, a Verde Santa Fe resident and former Cornville Community Association president opposed to her neighborhood’s annexation by the city.

King said residents are waiting to hear the results of an official count Monday.

According to the Cottonwood Community Development Department, the city had received 182 signatures from Verde Santa Fe property owners in favor of joining the city of Cottonwood as of Thursday.

At least 488 were required.

However, King said there’s still some doubt in the mind of many residents as to how many signatures should be required.

King said that the rules governing how many signatures are required can be interpreted differently, in her opinion.
