Students were busy last week at American Heritage Academy, both at the school’s Camp Verde Kindergarten to eight-grade campus and the kindergarten to 12-grade Cottonwood location. It was Constitution Week and the students focused on it as part of the school’s core mission to educate children about American ideals and the beliefs of the founding fathers.
The students also returned to new principals at the helm in both locations. In Camp Verde, Colleen Kerr has the new top administrative position.
Kerr has lived in the Camp Verde area since 1987, except for a year she worked in Colorado as the director of an intervention program. Her son wanted to come back to the Verde Valley, and Kerr agreed.
“This is a new job, but it feels like home to me,” Kerr said.
Kerr has plenty of experience with education in the Verde Valley. Kerr spent time at Camp Verde Middle School and 12 years working for the Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District. Kerr has also been a teacher at a local Catholic school.
She has two master’s degrees, one in elementary education and another in educational leadership, along with certification as a principal and reading specialist, and in early childhood development and English language learning.
At the Cottonwood American Heritage Academy, Ron Miller has taken over this year as principal. Miller has worked for American Heri-tage Academy for 13 years, most recently as assistant director at the school’s Camp Verde location. Miller formerly worked at the school when it was in Clarkdale as a science and math teacher. He went on to teach at the Cottonwood location for eight years.
