The Camp Verde High School football team has had a rough start to its 2012 season.
The Cowboys knew going into the season that it would be a rebuilding year, but they have felt the effects a rebuilding year can have more so than they wanted. The Cowboys [0-4] lost their fourth game Friday, Sept. 14, at home against the Chino Valley Cougars [1-3], 48-12.
The team previously lost to Scottsdale Christian, Payson and Williams.
Chino Valley started the game with the ball in its possession. The Cougars’ offense rushed pass the Cowboy defense, scoring their first touchdown within three minutes of the game. The extra point was no good. The Cougars defense proved to be just as strong as their offense, holding Camp Verde on three downs and forcing them to punt.
Once the Cowboys realized the type of offense they were playing against, the defense stepped up and blitzed on every down to put pressure on the Cougars’ quarterback. Defensive back Martin Felix, linebacker Tyler Dickey and safety Doug Ashley both had strong tackles that stopped the ball for loss yardage. On second and one, linebacker Josh Loza sacked the quarterback for a 13-yard loss, and linebacker Jobe Wolf forced a fumble with a Camp Verde recovery by Ashley.
