The day after primary elections were held across Yavapai County on Aug. 28, John McReynolds was busy back at work, cooking up some ribs and vegetables outside his Camp Verde restaurant.
McReynolds ran as a Republican candidate for the newly created Yavapai County District 2. McReynolds was up against fellow challenger Martin Pangburn and Yavapai County Board of Supervisors incumbent Thomas Thurman.
McReynolds was able to garner 1,461 votes, nearly 32 percent of the vote. It wasn’t enough to beat out Thurman, who with 2,571 votes topped out at nearly 56 percent. Pangburn came in third with 554 votes, around 12 percent.
“I survived,” McReynolds said.
McReynolds has run for office before and served in government. He was on the first Camp Verde Town Council when the town incorporated back in late 1986. After this latest experience, McReynolds said he’d definitely be open to running for office in the future.
“I might take a little time off to recover,” McReynolds said.
McReynolds isn’t just recovering from the election. He was involved in a traffic collision while returning from a political event in Chino Valley the week before last.
