Captains stay positive & motivated to lead Cowboys soccer

Published:

The Camp Verde High School girls soccer team played its first game of the season Aug. 28 at home against Show Low High School.

The Cowboys lost 1-0 in their season home-opener, but two strong captains are leading the team.

“Despite the intense heat, the Cowboys played strong, controlling much of the game,” CVHS girls soccer Head Coach Pat Allen said. “Show Low has a strong team, and the Cowboy defense stepped up and held them out of the goal throughout the game.”

The only goal scored in the game happened when the ball ricocheted off a Cowboy after it bounced around in the goal box, bouncing off a number of players of both teams.

The Cowboys’ goalkeeper and team captain, junior Adilene Ruiz, had three saves and played aggressively, often taking the ball from the Show Low offense before they could get off a shot.

On the offense, team captain and junior Maddy Showers shot five of the 12 goal attempts, but none found the back of the net.
