Marauders power by their cross Verde Valley rivals

Published:

The girls of the Mingus Union High School volleyball team forced their rival to surrender in just three sets in a gun-slinging match.

In their season opener on Tuesday, Aug. 29, the Marauders denied the Camp Verde High School Cowboys a set win. The Marauders won the overall match on their home court after beating the Cowboys 3-0.

MUHS volleyball Head Coach Brian Herman was proud of his team’s first-game win but couldn’t help but expect more from his players offensively.

“We did not play as well as I had expected offensively,” Herman said. “I expected some better numbers from our outside hitters.”

“However, passing, blocking, defense, and middle hitting stats looked great for early in the season. Overall, we won in three games so I can’t say that we did bad; I just expected a bit more.”

In the first set, the Marauders, who are small but powerful this season, faced strong defensive saves by the Cowboys. Nevertheless, the Marauders played with outstanding teamwork and took the lead early in the set. Setter Delaney Scanlan, middle blocker/middle hitter Sarah Cochrane and middle hitter/middle blocker Tristen Meacham had the front of the net covered and consistently used a fake play that they have down pat. The Marauders held the lead throughout the entire set and dominated the court with a 25-18 score to take the lead of the best-of-five series.
