Now town wants to widen SR 260

Published:

A few years ago, there was an effort to possibly turn State Route 260 into a divided four-lane highway between Cottonwood and Camp Verde.

Either that, or widen it with room leftover for several intersections along the way.

That effort fell apart when the communities and landowners involved couldn’t reach a consensus. The Arizona Department of Transportation moved on, although it did widen part of the highway near Cottonwood and added a couple of passing lanes at certain parts of the road.

Now Camp Verde officials are hoping to get the project started up again, Mel Preston said, economic development director for the Town of Camp Verde.

“It’s not currently on the ADOT five-year plan, but we hope to come together and get this project done,” Preston said. “It didn’t work out before, but we want to show that we’re serious about it.”

There are other smaller sections of the road slated for widening over the next five years, but the town would like to see more done, Preston said.
