Camp Verde loses championship to rival

Published:

The place to be on the evening of July 11 was at River Front Park in Cottonwood for the Division 10 Little League All-Stars Majors 11-12 Tournament championship game.

With the stands packed elbow-to-elbow, the Camp Verde-Cottonwood rivalry trickled down to the Little Leaguers as Team Camp Verde took on Team Verde Valley for the No. 1 title in the division.

“We haven’t beaten Verde Valley in two years,” Spencer Young, manager of Camp Verde, said before the game. “So this is our shot to beat them.”

Camp Verde already had faced Verde Valley in its first game of the tournament but lost 8 to 1.

Tyler Kelly of Verde Valley started the game pitching a walk and a strike-out. After Patrick Hood of Camp Verde’s single, Rafael Zapata hit a double, leading to the first score of the night.
