The place to be on the evening of July 11 was at Riverfront Park in Cottonwood for the Division 10 Little League All-Stars Majors 11-12 Tournament championship game.
With the stands packed elbow-to-elbow, the Cottonwood-Camp Verde rivalry trickled down to the Little Leaguers as Team Verde Valley took on Team Camp Verde for the No. 1 title in the division.
“We are very excited for the championship,” Pete Kelly, manager of Verde Valley, said before the game. “I had high expectations for my team, and I expected to be here.”
Verde Valley already had beaten Camp Verde 8 to 1 in its second game of the tournament.
Tyler Kelly of Verde Valley started the game pitching a walk and a strike-out. After Patrick Hood of Camp Verde’s single, Rafael Zapata hit a double, leading to the first score of the night.
