Local gymnasts head to Olympic trials

Published:

A local gymnastics team got a little taste of the Olympics.

The Flip City gymnastics team of Cottonwood attended the USA Olympic Trials for Gymnastics from June 28 through July 1 at the HP Pavillion in San Jose, Calif.

“Wow, it was incredible to be there,” said Dianne Upham, coach of the Flip City gymnastics team.

Upham was able to take her coaching staff and six of her competitive gymnasts, along with their mothers.

“We kind of made it a mother-daughter trip,” Upham said. “They had coaching clinics there, too, so my coaches came with us.”

Upham, who was a competitive gymnast herself before a torn anterior cruciate ligament sidelined her, wanted to take her girls to the Olympic Trials because it is a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience.

“[The trials] show how tough gymnastics makes you,” Upham said.
