A Camp Verde resident upset by the recent Camp Verde Town Council decision to raise the local sales tax by 1 percent has threatened some of the town’s elected leaders with a recall.
George Young, a Camp Verde resident, said he felt like raising the tax rate wasn’t something the Town Council should have taken upon itself without asking the public first.
The issue was put on the ballot in November 2010, when voters gave it an overwhelming “no” with a 2,420 to 663 vote.
The council originally passed the tax increase late last month with a 6-1 vote. Mayor Bob Burnside voted against the measure, arguing that he didn’t feel it was appropriate to raise taxes through council action when he feels there are still people struggling with tough economic times.
The move puts Camp Verde’s sales tax rate on par with other communities in the Verde Valley, but the town still won’t tax food like that bought at a grocery store.
