‘Sharrows’ add to city’s bike-friendliness

Published:

Cottonwood is joining the League of American Bicyclists and other communities across the country in recognizing May as Bike Month.

Several events will take place to celebrate two-wheeled transportation, including a Bike Rodeo at the Cottonwood Recreation Center on Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m; the honoring of Bike-to-Work week from Monday to Friday, May 14 to 18; a Ride of Silence at Riverfront Park on Wednesday, May 16, at 5 p.m.; and the annual Mayor/Council bike ride Friday, May 25, at 8 a.m.

While the city might not seem the easiest place to ride a bicycle, as anyone who has tried to cycle along South Main or looked for a bike rack in front of local businesses can probably attest, city staff and local cyclists are working to make getting around on two wheels easier and future Bike Months more eventful.

The city has had an official bicycle plan since 2009, with local residents and city staff advocating cycling well before then.
