Town of Camp Verde’s shelter is not closed

Rumors the Town of Camp Verde is preparing to close the local animal shelter are as of now unfounded.

The recent resignation of a Camp Verde animal control officer led to speculation among the town was immediately preparing to close up the doors on the Montezuma Castle Highway operation and move all the animals to the shelter in Cottonwood.

While moving animals to Cottonwood is a possibility that has been discussed, Camp Verde Town Marshal Nancy Gardner said no decisions have been made as of yet.

“We’re looking at the short term and the long term,” Gardner said.

The town leases the shelter from the owner of a veterinary clinic, which the shelter is attached to.

Town Manager Russ Martin said the owner expressed interest in expanding his business into the area now used by the shelter, but not immediately.
