Sculpture marks state’s geographic center

Published:

If Arizona were a dart board, Camp Verde would be pretty close to the bull’s-eye.

That’s why dozens of people gathered in windswept Rezzonico Family Park on Sunday, April 1.

It may have been April Fool’s Day, but this wasn’t a prank.

They were there to mark the official unveiling of a metal sculpture marking Camp Verde as the geographic center of Arizona.

Well, close enough, anyway.

The center was determined by the Arizona Professional Land Surveyors group using a series of tools and equations to find which spot of land is in the exact center of this irregularly-shaped state.

The actual center happens to be in a bit of barely accessible wilderness.

The group then decided to pick a town closest to the spot to give the new monument to.
