Ballot boxes will be open in the Verde Valley and around Yavapai County when voters line up to cast their vote Tuesday, Feb. 28, for Arizona’s Presidential Preference Election.
Unlike some primary elections where anyone registered to vote can participate, the presidential preference election is open only to registered members of participating political parties.
This year, only the Republican and Green parties have opted to take part in the election, according to the Yavapai County Elections Office.
In Arizona, there are just over 1 million registered Republicans who can cast their ballots.
While some names have certainly been in the news — names like Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich — there are actually more than 20 Republican candidates on this year’s preference ballot in Arizona from all around the country.
The Green party is fielding six candidates in the state, three from Arizona and the remaining three from Wisconsin, California and Colorado.
Early voting began Feb. 2, and early ballot request forms were still available on the Yavapai County Election Office’s website as of press time.
The physical polling locations will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the day of the preference election.
Voters will need to bring a form of identification with a name, address and photograph, or two forms of identification that have the name and current address together.
Without a photo ID, voters will need two items like utility bills or bank statements from within the last 90 days.
This preference election is for the office of United States president only; other local candidates will be on the ballot in primary elections later in the year.
