A Camp Verde Marshal’s Office deputy shot a man Friday night, Jan. 27, following a high-speed pursuit.
Officers and deputies with the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office chased an armed man northbound on I-17 on Jan. 27, according to Robin Bruno with CVMO.
The suspect’s vehicle was stopped in Camp Verde just before the suspect attempted to flee on foot.
According to an eyewitness to the aftermath on I-17 around 9 p.m., the suspect’s vehicle appeared to be a white pickup truck.
It apparently had flat tires as if it had possibly been stopped with a spike strip, but that couldn’t be confirmed by law enforcement by press time.
Deputies with the marshal’s office were called in to help apprehend the suspect, who was believed to be possibly suicidal, according to Bruno.
CVMO deputy David Freeman found the suspect in a vacant lot, where the suspect brandished his weapon, according to police reports.
Freeman opened fire on the suspect, firing several shots, at least one of which struck the suspect.
The suspect was airlifted to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office is heading up the criminal investigation, while the Cottonwood Police Department will handle the administrative investigation into the shooting at the request of CVMO.
