Camp Verde boys beat rival Big Park at home, 39 to 19

The boys basketball team at Camp Verde Middle School found its early season groove at home Thursday, Dec. 1, defeating rival Big Park Community School, 39-19.

Camp Verde took a 9-7 lead after the first quarter of play but held the Coyotes to only three points in the second period, taking a 17-10 lead at halftime.

Seventh-grade forward Beau Bullard was outstanding Thursday, leading his team with 10 points and several rebounds in the victory.

Bullard stepped up his game in the second half, helping his Cowboys outscore Big Park 22-9 in the half to go on and win, 39-19.

With the victory over Big Park, the Cowboys are 3-1 to begin the 2011-2012 campaign. First-year Head Coach Donnie Shanks believes his team is going to be solid this season.

“The boys played well against Big Park. We’ve got some good players and we should be OK this year,” Shanks said.

Shanks was the head coach at Oak Creek School for 12 years prior to this season, and took the head job at Camp Verde this past summer.

Other top performances against Big Park on Thursday include seventh-grade center Reyes Herrera, who had nine points, while seventh-grade guard Ryan Cain had four points. Eighth-grade guard Ashton Lorin didn’t score, but chipped in at least six assists in the victory.

“Ashton [Lorin] is usually our leading scorer but he did a great job setting the other guys up against Big Park,” Shanks said.

The Cowboys were in action again Tuesday, Dec. 6, when they traveled to Beaver Creek School. Results were unavailable at press time.

Next up, Camp Verde is set to travel to Mayer Middle School on Thursday, Dec. 8. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
