Yavapai County District 3 Supervisor Chip Davis told the Mingus Mountain Republican Club on Tuesday, June 14, he prefers redistricting Map C proposed by the Yavapai County Redistricting Committee.
Map C keeps upper Verde Valley communities like Cottonwood and Clarkdale together in District 3 and places Sedona and Camp Verde in a new District 5.
“I’ve been neutral up until today so people could make up their own minds, but there’s a lot at stake for the Verde Valley,” Davis said.
“I hope the end result is what’s best for Yavapai County. This is a very political issue and when politics are involved, I think you need to get on the bandwagon,” he said.
Map C is more fair to the Verde Valley than Map A, B or D because it encompasses large populations from rural areas in two districts, Davis said.
“The most important thing is you have a minimum of two strong representatives from two rural districts,” he said.
Map C includes Cottonwood, Verde Villages, Jerome, Clarkdale, Cornville, Page Springs and a section of Prescott Valley in District 3. District 3 would stretch all the way to the northeast corner of the county, encompassing 43,053 people.
The reformed District 3 would wrap around the north end of a new District 5. Map C would include Sedona, Red Rock, Lake Montezuma, Cherry, Camp Verde and large sections of Prescott Valley in District 5, encompassing 42,159 people.
The Board of Supervisors will vote to approve one of the four proposed maps in August.
