New council tasked with balancing budget

Published:

The Camp Verde Town Council meets this week to continue working on crafting a spending plan as the new fiscal year quickly approaches.

The town needs to have a balanced budget ready for approval before the 2011-2012 fiscal year begins Friday, July 1.

Council made some tough cuts this year, as the town still deals with the fallout of the economic downturn. It’s something town finances are especially sensitive to since most of the government’s revenue comes from sales taxes.

Council already reviewed a preliminary draft of the proposed budget in May, a document mapping out around $5 million in spending.

This week at a Wednesday, June 8 ,work session, council will review additional requests from town departments, including possibly making decisions on a request from the Camp Verde Community Library for $3,000 for a new copy machine lease and more than $26,000 for a new checkout system for library patrons.

The town’s public works department is also requesting just under $50,000 to start making improvements to Black Bridge on Montezuma Castle Highway.

Council will also address how it wants to handle other line items, including one for potential unanticipated grant revenue.

Finally, council will look at setting the fees it charges people for various services, from making copies for the public and business license costs to special event permits and building inspection fees.

The preliminary budget is available online in the agenda packet at campverde.az.gov.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 473 S. Main St., Room 106.
