With more than 99.8 percent of District 1 precincts reporting, Republicans were in control of most local races and appeared to be pulling away from their Democratic challengers.
In Arizona State Senate District 1, incumbent State Senator Steve Pierce was leading his Democratic challenger, Bob Donahue, 47,106 to 25,263.
In State House District 1, incumbent Representative Andy Tobin was in the lead with 41,721 votes, followed by Republican Karen Fann with 36,933 votes. Democrat Lindsay Bell trailed with 25,894 votes. The top two vote getters in that race win seats in the legislature.
In the District 1 Congressional race, a newcomer to politics, Republican Paul Gosar was defeating one-term Democrat Rep. Anne Kirkpatrick, 98,123 to 86,381.
With 100 percent of the precincts reporting in the Mingus Union High School District, incumbent Jim Ledbetter and Anita Glazar each won one of two open seats on the MUHSD Governing Board with 5,327 and 4,830 votes respectively.
Challenger Anthony Lozano finished third with 3,747 votes.
With 32 percent of precincts reporting statewide, incumbent Republican Sen. John McCain was headed to victory over his Democrat opponent, Rodney Glassman, by a margin of 792,334 to 464,413.
Likewise, incumbent Republican Gov. Jan Brewer was defeating her challenger, Democrat Terry Goddard, 748,179 to 568,815.
Though it was failing by a wide margin in Yavapai County, the medical marijuana initiative, Proposition 203, was locked in a virtual dead heat in voting statewide. With 32 percent of precincts reporting, no votes led yes votes 661,988 to 655,285, a difference of less than 1 percent.
In Yavapai County, 61 percent of registered voters cast ballots while in Coconino County, just under 50 percent of those registered voted, according to the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office.
